  16. designer whose work attracted devotees on the order of Jacqueline
  17. Kennedy and Grace Kelly; in Paris. Mme. Gres, as she was universally
  18. known in couture, originally trained as a sculptor--an influence
  19. apparent in her trademark Grecian draped gowns. Though she died
  20. in the fall of 1993, her daughter Anne had carefully kept the
  21. death a secret for 13 months out of pique that her mother's
  22. work had--in Anne's view--been ignored in recent years.
